August 26, 2021: Pokémon Go is getting back its pandemic distance changes
Pokémon Go’s company Niantic announced Wednesday that it is going back on at least one of its changes in the game. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the company increased the base interaction radius for Pokéstops and Gyms to 80 meters. In early August, Niantic reverted the distance back to 40 meters and fanned up the player’s outrage. Now it promises to keep the 80-meter-distance permanently and will also announce some other changes on September 1st.
August 9, 2021: Niantic responses to criticism over the removal of COVID-19 changes
Niantic has removed its previous changes made during the pandemic, which made it possible for players to play from home or play outside while social distancing, including doubling the size of the radius and widening the radius from 40 meters to 80 meters. Now, these changes have been removed “as a test” in the United States and New Zealand amid massive protests. Niantic’s response defends its removal, saying that “we want people to connect to real places in the real world, and to visit places that are worth exploring”.
